Speaker: This is the power of computers, it’s measured instructions per second per dollar and that’s the price performance of computation. This goes back to the 1890 census and it’s a logarithm scale, every time you go up the graph we’re multiplying actually by a hundred thousand. So this little, simple, little curve represents trillions-fold increase in a century.

It’s a billion fold just since I was a student, but what’s really interesting about this is look at how smooth and predictable a trajectory this is. It went through thick and thin, through war and peace. We had the First World War, the Second World War, the Cold War. We had the Great Depression. It has gone unscathed through the recent recession.
