What is the Singularity, and when will the Singularity occur?
Ray Kurzweil: The Singularity is a future period in which technological change will be so rapid and it’s impact so profound that every aspect of human life will be irreversibly transformed.
There won’t be a clear distinction between humans and machines. Our computers are not going to be these rectangular devices that we put in our pocket. They’re going to be inside our bodies and brains and we’re going to be a hybrid of biological and non-biological intelligence.
If you go back five hundred years, not much happens in a century. Now, a lot happens in six months. Technology feeds on itself and it gets faster and faster. In about 40 years, the pace of change is going to be so astonishingly quickly. You wont be able to keep up unless you enhance your own intelligence by merging with the intelligent technology we are creating. So that’s such a profound transformation that we’ve borrowed this metaphor from physics and call that a singularity.
Transcendent Man: Singularity
The singularity documentary that chronicles the life and ideas of Ray Kurzweil, the inventor and futurist known for his bold vision of the Singularity, a point in the near future when technology will be changing so rapidly, that we will have to enhance ourselves with artificial intelligence to keep up. Ray predicts this will be the dawning of a new civilization in which we will no longer be dependent on our physical bodies, we will be billions of times more intelligent and there will be no clear distinction between human and machine, real reality and virtual reality.
Human aging and illness will be reversed; world hunger and poverty will be solved and we will ultimately cure death. Critics accuse Ray of being too optimistic and argue that the dangers of the Singularity far outweigh the benefits. Pointing out the apocalyptic implications that once machines achieve consciousness. We may not be able to control them. Whether Ray’s controversial ideas incite excitement or fear, dogma or disbelief. This ambitious documentary will forever change the way you look at life, death, and your own future.
